Crossbill Cottage gets its name from the exceptionally rare two barred crossbill which was famously sighted here and brought many bird watchers. The bird life is exceptional in this area making a stay here an ideal location for keen bird watchers.

The area is also a haven for walkers with many challenging footpaths direct from your doorstep including a lovely scenic walk close by from Clay Bank car park to Round Hill, the highest point on the North York Moors with one of the best view points, and the area of Bilsdale is widely renowned for the spectacular views of the surrounding area. The famous 110 mile Cleveland Way is also located just a stones' throw from the property. There is rock climbing twenty minutes walk away at the Wainstones.

The elegant town of Stokesley is 10 miles away and is situated on the River Leven at the foot of the Cleveland Hills and is the gateway to the Moors and the East Yorkshire coast. Travelling 10 miles south you can appreciate other beautiful areas within the National Park such as the beautiful market town of Helmsley with its own impressive castle and the 12th century ruins which tower over the town. En route to Helmsley you must visit the stunning Rievaulx Abbey which is the perfect choice for a peaceful and tranquil day out.
